lung cancer

Lung Cancer cause

While lung cancer is often thought of as a smoker’s disease, smoking is not its only cause. There are a number of risks that may cause lung cancer, among those being age, smoking, and exposure to asbestos, radon or chemical agents such as Agent Orange or depleted uranium (DU).

Lung Cancer Diagnose

As the leading cause of cancer death in the United States, being diagnosed with lung cancer can seem overwhelming. This is especially true for those diagnosed with asbestos-induced lung cancer, as their exposure likely occurred decades before symptoms began to arise.Though the symptoms of lung cancer can vary depending on the type and location of the cancer, the diagnostic tools and procedures involved are essentially the same.

Six Types of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Treatment

  • Surgery - A total of four different types of surgery are used in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer: wedge resection, lobectomy, pneumoectomy, and sleeve resection.

Three Types of Small Cell Lung Cancer Treatment

  • Surgery - This treatment is only available to patients with cancer in one lung and nearby lymph nodes. Unfortunately, since small cell lung cancer is typically found in both lungs, surgery is not commonly used. Laser therapy, which involves the application of a narrow beam of light that kills cancer cells, may be used during surgery.

District fined for lack of asbestos plan

  • A charter school district that includes a northeast Phoenix charter school failed to have an asbestos inspection for a decade and has received a nearly $4,000 fine.
  • District officials said they went 10 years without an asbestos inspection because they were unaware they needed one.
  • While no asbestos was discovered, the schools did not have an asbestos management plan in place until this month.
  • Exposure to asbestos can cause numerous illnesses including lung cancer, Higuchi said.

Schools asbestos is'no cause for alarm'

  • Elaine Todd, children’s service’s director, said: "Each school has an asbestos management plan.
  • Research shows mesothelioma — an incurable, aggressive lung cancer — is triggered by exposure to asbestos in 85 per cent of cases.
  • Ms Todd added: "I am not aware of any pupils or teachers that have died as a result of mesothelioma as a result of working in Tameside schools." Councillor Ged Cooney, education chief, said: "We have an asbestos register for each school so we know exactly where it is.
  • For Tameside Council to then claim that asbestos poses 'little or no risk' to students and staff means that Tameside council must have complete confidence in asbestos management in every school – of any type and ownership - and in every nursery school.
  • The encapsulation of asbestos sounds impressive until one realises that defences against hidden asbestos often relies on bathroom sealant, sealing ceiling tiles and extensive sealing of gaps and small holes – but then no air tests are carried out with disturbance simulating normal school activity to test if the defences are holding on a daily basis and standard surveys and inspections do not do it.
  • It is not surprising that Councillor Todd has not heard of pupils who have died as a result of mesothelioma caused in schools in Tameside.
  • It would also be interesting to know what research he has undertaken to identify Tameside teachers who have contracted mesothelioma before producing his statement.
  • It requires Councillors to critically examine asbestos management methods in practise and carefully respond to asbestos issues with facts that encourage alertness and proper asbestos management rather than encourage complacent acceptance that all is perfect.
  • They could ask why these experts, MPs and these investigators are worried about asbestos management in schools and then critically analyse their own management systems and their own statements against these worries.

Hope for workers scarred by asbestos

  • There were no rules in those days and I had no protection." He may not have realised it at the time, but his exposure to asbestos was condemning him to years of breathing difficulties.
  • Gerald, a grandfather-of-three, also has a potentially more serious legacy of those nine months – the scars on his ribcage and diaphragm brought about by pleural plaques.
  • The condition is not painful in itself and has no symptoms, but means a higher risk of potentially fatal conditions such as lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma.
  • Insurance companies have long opposed compensation for pleural plaques and say they do not cause other conditions.
  • It's not nice having it hanging over you, particularly with the other breathing problems I have been having." Chris Stansfield, a partner at Nottingham law firm Nelsons, has been dealing with asbestos compensation cases for almost two decades.
  • But since the Lords ruling in 2007 he has had to tell people diagnosed with pleural plaques they are not entitled to any recompense for their heightened risk of serious disease.
  • Sufferers of conditions such as mesothelioma are able to apply for compensation but in many cases become seriously ill before they get a chance.
  • "There is no perfect option for dealing with this issue, but pleural plaques are a serious condition and doing nothing is simply not an option." Mr Stansfield said: "People are still getting diagnosed with this and are being told they have an asbestos-related condition.
  • "I have met people who used to work in major industry and there is a good chance they used to work next to someone who has died of mesothelioma.
